Equine Myofunctional Therapy

What is Equine Myofunctional Therapy

Most horses attending pony clubs, adult riding clubs and competing are more likely uncomfortable and not performing to the best of their abilities. Why? Because an important aspect of the horse’s ability may have been neglected, the muscles.

Healthy Horses muscles keep him moving well

The skeletal cannot move without muscles. Healthy muscles will promote better function of the horse’s range of movement and also improve general health. How? Via Equine Myofunctional Therapy (or EMT).

What does EMT mean? If myo means muscles, EMT is a therapy using different massage techniques to promote efficient function of the muscles.

EMT will promote muscle health so the joints can move to their full range of movement and homeostasis (or balance) to all the other systems within the horse.

When to use Equine Myofunctional Therapy

As horse owners we try to do our best to look after our equine friends. We purchase expensive feeds, saddles, vehicles, rugs and many more.

We pay for farriers/trimmers, for instructors, memberships.

However, despite all those expenditures is your horse happy and healthy? Is he comfortable and performing to the best of its abilities?

If your horse is experiencing

  • stiffness
  • shortness of stride
  • discomfort
  • cold back
  • is in medium/hard work or simply grazing and enjoying life

Equine Myofunctional Therapy, or EMT, can help.

About Sandie Giroux-Harries & Equine Myofunctional Massage

About 18 months after purchasing my OTTB, I started taking lessons and was hoping to train up to eventing. However, his behaviour was very unpredictable, sour, uncomfortable and very sensitive. I started doing some research and lots of reading on many different topic. I could sense that something wasn’t right with his body but I didn’t know what or what to do to help him feel comfortable. I ten started asking other horse owners about different professionals that could come and assist. I then realised that due to previous injuries sustain from racing, body works would become an ongoing expense.

Since I like being hands on with most of the things I do with my horses, I decided to do a course so I can learn what there is to know regarding bio mechanic and body systems. After looking into many different courses I decided to enrol in a myo functional therapy course with NCTM.

I developed a passion after acknowledging the benefits and I then pursued to do a red light therapy course and then a basic Masterson method course. I always want to learn more and understand about bio mechanic. I constantly read articles, research, follow professionals blogs.

Since finding this way of trimming and rebalancing hooves to their natural state of health, I can now see and correlate how hooves can impact freedom of motion in the horse. Explain, notice and understand stiffness and discomfort the horse may be enduring. It is fascinating and yet so simple.
